10 reasons to be on Pinterest that don’t involve traffic:
1. Keep track of links you want to read
2. Build your brand
3. Get ideas for photo shoots
4. Keep your recipes in one place
5. Find tutorials
6. Meet people through group boards
7. Find other blogs to follow
8. Research blog design ideas
9. Collect ideas for blog posts
10. Finally find a Lego storage solution that suits your budget and lifestyle
These ideas all came from my #BlogPhotoChat last Thursday. We had many lovely bloggers who use Pinterest, who came along and generously shared their advice and experience. We discussed things to do, and things not to do. You’ll be pleased to hear there are many more positive steps to take than negative:
Things a new blogger on Pinterest should definitely do:
1. Make clear categories for your boards.
2. Promote older, evergreen posts.
3. Pin other people’s work, not just your own.
4. Join group boards (try pingroupie.com to find boards to join – or join our very own #BlogPhotoChat group board for bloggers).
5. Follow similar accounts.
6. Use good photos – this is essential – and ideally sized 600x900px, and with a text overlay.
7. To find out who Pins from your site, go to Pinterest.com/source/YOURURL.
8. Write your descriptions carefully, make them appealing, use keywords, and don’t be afraid to re-do descriptions when you repin.
9. Use private boards for off-message stuff.
10. Also, use private boards to get new boards full of Pins. Only go live when you have at least 5 Pins (to fill up all the thumbnail spots on the preview).
11. Check the links of everything you Pin. Don’t send people to a 404 not found page, or spam sites.
12. Rearrange the order of your boards to suit the season.
13. Try temporary boards that you change once an event has passed by.
14. Think about scheduling Pins.
Things NOT to do on Pinterest:
1. Put spam or irrelevant links in comments.
2. Join a group board and then post more than about 5 Pins in a row.
That was all we could come up with. Do you have any etiquette advice for Pinterest, or things you hate to see? Send me a tweet:
